There are artists on both sides of the family. Second-cousin Reg Parlett was a renowned cartoonist and my mother's ancestors included several artists named Ladbrooke associated with the Norwich school of landscape painters. I used to paint but gave it up for lack of time and space. Photography has therefore become a substitute form of picture-making, being quicker, less messy, and generally more convenient. The theory is that I photograph scenes and things that I intend to get round to painting "when I retire". But I doubt I ever will, so maybe I'll just stick to sketching and photography.
